FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK
Dear Recruiter, Greetings from IIM Calcutta! It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the placement activities of our Institute. Through the pages of this brochure you will get an explicit overview of our programme, activities and the placement process. We started the Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPEX) in 2006 and today the programme is in its eleventh year. Faculty members and other stakeholders of the Institute envisaged the need of starting a specialized full time programme, designed to select and incubate people with exceptional intellectual and leadership potential to meet today’s globally challenging business environment where they can remain competitive by thinking strategically and tactically. Keeping in mind this changing business environment we have also tried to keep the curriculum updated, and have recently restructured the PGPEX curriculum, which was made operational from the Academic Session 2015-2016. Individual research projects, introduction of pre-work and workshop modes of teaching, live projects within a course have been encouraged in the revised curriculum. In 2014, the PGPEX students with their rich and diverse domain experience launched the first edition of the PGPEX online newsletter, “PGPEX Business Review”. PGPEX candidates come with a rich and diverse domain experience. IIM Calcutta has been featuring in international business school ranking since 2013 and ranked 23rd in global FT MIM Ranking 2016 for their flagship PGP programmes with the No. 1 position in career parameter. IIM Calcutta has been qualified to participate in FT Global MBA ranking for the first time in 2016-17 and ranked within 100 the best global B-Schools. At home, IIM Calcutta participated in selected surveys on best business schools in India being conducted by various research agencies on behalf of the leading publications. The Institute has ranked number 1 position in the Hindu Business Line MBA Universe.Com rankings, while Business Today, Outlook and India Today ranked IIM Calcutta as number 2 B-School in the country. IIM Calcutta ranked 3rd in the inaugural edition of India Ranking 2016 being undertaken by National Institutional Ranking Framework and also participated in the India Ranking 2017 and ranked 3rd. The institute got the accreditation status from both AACSB and AMBA and recently the EQUIS Accreditation Board has awarded the EQUIS Accreditation to IIM Calcutta for a period of three years. With EQUIS accreditation we become the first Indian business school to achieve the ‘Triple Crown’ in accreditation, i.e. accredited by all the three major accreditation agencies in the world for management education. It is also the only Indian member of CEMS, an exclusive global alliance of business schools. Through accreditation, IIM Calcutta has not only met specific standards of excellence, but also made a commitment to ongoing improvement to ensure that the institution will continue to deliver high quality education to its students. About IIM Calcutta The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, or IIMC, was born out of a partnership between the industry and academia, to pioneer management education and research in India. Established in 1961 by the Government of India, in collaboration with Alfred P. Global Exposure International Immersion Program @ Germany The contemporary business scenario makes it imperative upon the budding industry leaders to evolve a global outlook and greater understanding of the work environment in diverse cultural settings. In line with this requirement, PGPEX curriculum provisions for an international immersion program through a partner B-School in an organizing country. Twenty five students of the current batch went through this program for two weeks at Mannheim Business School, Germany. This Immersion program was based on the theme ”Doing Business in Germany”. The course was designed to develop an understanding about economic, cultural, and geopolitical drivers behind Germany’s growth to the leader of European economy. Students attended classroom sessions by highly qualified faculty with the focus on European economic integration, international business management with German perspective, and marketing and operational strategies of European businesses. The classroom learning was further reinforced by experiential learning through on-site visits to European Central Bank and to hidden champions of German SME industry such as Hager, Kleemann and Karcher. This helped students in getting an insight into German business practices, organizational work culture, level of technological adoption and innovative approaches these organizations employ to resolve complex challenges. Thus, students could develop an understanding of the factors that helped these organizations in maintaining a global competitive advantage through long standing strategic positioning and operational efficiencies. The interaction with German business leaders and the social networking events further provided an opportunity for learning and building a strong relationship with these professionals. Through such activities, students could understand some finer social and cultural aspects of “Doing Business in Germany”. The immersion program, thus, helped students in transforming their business perspective about working in a global environment and this will help them emerge as successful global leaders in the industry.
International Immersion Program @ US The Global Immersion program has been a very important part of PGPEX Curriculum as it has, over the years, revealed to its students the pedagogy of other global Business Schools and provided them with the opportunity to partake and experience the best global business practices & technological disruptions that are shaping the future. This year, twenty-three students attended the 2week long program - "US Business Strategy and Entrepreneurship” at Michael G. Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. The Classroom sessions were a blend of lectures, case analysis & discussions on Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Analytics & Strategy supplemented with interesting anecdotes of companies that have established themselves as global leaders and are now deploying technology to spawn new business opportunities. In addition to the latest tools and management frameworks, the students were introduced to fresh perspectives on a wide array of topics such as assessment of business models, formulating corporate strategies, effective decision making & fostering innovative culture.
This Immersion Program was an opportunity to learn about the key elements of effective leadership, the role of leaders as agents of change, and the delicate issues that leaders face in today’s complex organizational structures. Visits to a few of the prominent fortune 500 companies - Paccar, Amazon, Boeing and Starbucks gave the students an exclusive opportunity to get a close view of the operations and to interact with prominent leaders of these organizations. These interactions helped students understand the recipe of how companies generate competitive advantage over their peers, adopt leaner and agile manufacturing practices, and introduce technological innovations. In many ways, the Global Immersion Program, was a glimpse into the future, enabling the students to look at forthcoming challenges with different perspectives and the innovative ways to overcome them. Additionally, it sensitized them about global culture and the integration challenges that one would face in an increasingly global business world.
International Immersion Program @ UK The immersion programme is an opportunity to learn how to address business issues in an international cross-cultural environment. This year, 20 students of PGPEX visited Strathclyde Business School, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK (only Triple Accredited business school in Scotland; Business School of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards 2016) for a 2-week International Immersion Programme. The classroom discussions began with Brexit, and its plausible impact on the economy and trade of UK & EU as well as the rest of the world including India. There were inputs from Fraser of Allander Institute, which is Scotland’s leading independent economic research institute. The next session discussed u p o n t h e ‘Globalization of Business Services’ and how decisions of offshoring, nearshoring, onshoring and reshoring are affecting the outsourcing industry globally. The characteristics of BPO industry were discussed given that India is one of the major players in the Industry. It was followed by a session on Strategic Foresight. One of the objectives of the immersion programme was to help students gain insights into the financial sector which took a big hit after the 2008 financial crisis. The changes and restructuring of banks post the 2008 fiasco were seen and discussed during the visits to the headquarters of Royal Bank of Scotland, Gogarburn and Clydesdale Bank, Glasgow. The visits were interspersed with discussions on Financial Technologies, Risk Management and Future of Financial Services in Europe. The students even had a first-hand experience of world financial markets at the Bloomberg Lab at the Business School. Industrial visits were organised to Babcock International at Rosyth Business Park, one of the largest waterside manufacturing facilities in UK and to Scottish Power’s Cruachan Power Station, an engineering marvel inside a hollow mountain. Babcock explained its workflow during the site visit and demonstrated how it manages and delivers large complex projects. At the power plant, its history, operating details and possibility of expansion were talked about, while keeping in mind that Scottish Power is focused on delivering a sustainable, greener energy future. The students visited Strathclyde Enterprise Hub as well as Technology and Innovation Centre of the University, where they interacted with the budding entrepreneurs who shared new business ideas and their plans of implementation. Networking events were organised with representatives of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, as well as with Strathclyde Alumni and Strathclyde Business Fellows. During study tours/visits, students also had the chance to explore the culture and history of Scotland on their visit to the Edinburgh Festival and a day-tour of Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and Glengoyne Whisky Distillery. Bagpipes playing in the University halls marked the end of the Immersion programme in University of Strathclyde. The International Immersion in all proved to be a great learning experience, one which would be cherished by all not only because of the memories we created but also because of the valuable lessons that we learned.
IIMC Different Strokes Management Centre for Human Values (MCHV) IIM Calcutta has a vision to emerge as an international centre of management education with its foundation on Indian ethos and values. Management Centre for Human Values is a significant milestone in achieving this vision and holds up to humankind contemporary adaptations from the perennial and vibrant corpus of Indian philosophical wisdom. The centre offers courses in Business Ethics, Value-based Leadership, NGO Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and also conducts short duration Management Development Programmes and In-Company Programmes, and Workshop on these themes besides publishing an international bi-annual journal viz the Journal of Human Values through the Sage Publications.
Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) at IIM Calcutta is an initiative to achieve greater understanding and analysis of these areas and to stimulate their development for societal benefit. CEI's vision is to grow as a program of international renown, where students, faculty, alumni, industry and policy makers collaborate, learn and innovate. CEI is involved in entrepreneurial research and case development in collaboration with industry, to support creation of new ventures and experience sharing with established entrepreneurs, to enable budding entrepreneurs to make a smooth transition from idea to implementation.
Innovation Park (IIP) IIM Calcutta's efforts towards promoting Entrepreneurship and creating an eco-system to nurture start-ups has got a fillip recently as it has incorporated on 22 August 2014 a not-for-profit company, called IIM Calcutta Innovation Park (IIP) as a section 8 company under the Companies Act 2013. The main objective of this newly formed company is to promote start-ups in five broad areas - healthcare, education, clean technology, lifestyle and analytics. The newly formed company has planned to raise seed fund to the tune of Rs.10 - 20 crore from our alumni to provide initial seed money to the start-ups incubated at IIM Calcutta.
Financial Research and Trading Lab The Financial Research and Trading Lab (the Finance Lab) at IIM Calcutta was set up in November 2008 to undertake cutting edge research on financial markets using real time high frequency data from financial markets of India and around the world. The Finance Lab uses a simulator to simulate trading in financial markets using actual prices. In 2011, there was a grant from the Union Finance Ministry of Rs. 20 crore. The Lab has since augmented its physical infrastructure and procured international databases & softwares. The Lab has over a dozen Bloomberg terminals and over 78 terminals. The terminals are loaded with a trading simulator and contain data from six markets NSE- Cash and F&O BSE-Cash, NCDEX, MCX and Currency futures. 16

Alumni Speak The PGPEX at IIM Calcutta, a decade ago (2007-08) was like drinking management straight from the fire hose. PGPEX was the metamorphosis I had been searching for and when I joined the programme 2013-14, like everyone else in the batch, I too was looking for a “break”. The course refined me in more ways than one, though in the initial days, it was academically daunting and looked invincible. The best part of the programme was and always will be the peer learning. Questions get answered in the canteens over dinner and concepts get broken down in the hostel common rooms. The courses offered by the professors form the core of the programme and the demands from the professors are unrelenting. Placement Process and Policies At IIM Calcutta, we want recruiting our students to be easy and flexible. We also want to optimize your success and deliver highest yield possible based on your offers and marketing efforts. With this in mind, we have outlined a set of guidelines practised by organizations that tend to have the highest acceptance rate. Unless explicit permission has been provided by the Placement Committee, participants are restricted from approaching companies directly for individual placements. Campus Visit Policy Companies may visit the Institute before the scheduled placement days to conduct industry talks and discussions. Following guidelines shall be applicable in this context: • Any on-campus activity which is not a part of regular academic curriculum is defined as company-participant interaction. Companies can conduct a maximum of two interactions for PGPEX (slot for interaction will be assigned on a first come first serve basis)
• Employers are expected to honour any offers they extend. If an offer must be rescinded, employers should contact the account manager immediately to work out a positive communication strategy.
• All campus activities must be scheduled in conjunction with the PGPEX Placement Committee.
Grade Non - Disclosure
• The fixed joining fee per student is charged for the services offered to the company throughout the course of recruitment from the campus. • All placement charges should be settled within one month of students joining the organization. The institute however does not guarantee that the student will join the company or will remain in the job for a specified duration of time. • Service taxes, if applicable, will be charged in addition to the fees.
Communication • Recruiters are required to communicate the offer details to the PGPEX Placement Committee in order to enable the Committee to streamline the placement process for both recruiter and participant. • We advise our students to consider each opportunity as a long-term commitment and to accept offers where they can make contributions over time. The placement committee understands your need to finalize business
planning and encourage students to make their decisions as quickly as possible.
